In Norse practice, the soul is a modern term- in later years there were parts of the spirit that made up a person. This painting is a compilation of generations of the Hugr and the Hamingja. The Hugr is your higher self, or the spirit that lives in your mind, your thoughts. The Hamingja is the luck, the skills, the wealth that is passed down from one ancestor to you. Not everyone in your line has the same Hamingja, but everyone does have this spirit and will eventually pass it on to a descendant. I’m lucky enough to know the name of one of my ancestors who passed on the Hamingja to me. So, this portrait is of all the generations who have experienced the same Hamingja as I.
